The eNotes Blog The Many Faces of SherlockHolmes
The Many Faces of SherlockHolmes In honor of the Mr. Holmes movie release this weekend, starring Gandalf Sir Ian McKellen, we wanted to look back at the various faces of Sir Arthur Conan Doyles infamous detective. The original text describes Holmes as ââ¬Å"over six feetâ⬠tall and ââ¬Å"excessively leanâ⬠, with sharp, piercing eyes and a ââ¬Å"hawk-like noseâ⬠(A Study in Scarlet). But his incarnation on screen has run the gamut from young to old, bookish to brawny. No other character has been portrayed more often on the big screen- over 250 times, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Id love to know your favorite iteration, and if youre planning on seeing the film this weekend, so share your thoughts in the comments below! Basil Rathbone The Hound of the Baskervilles, etc. movies (1939-1946) Image via basilrathbone.net Rathboneââ¬â¢s gentlemanly portrayal is the classic that defined Sherlock Holmes for generations to come. Rathboneââ¬â¢s character was the first to don the stereotypical Holmes getup: deerstalker (the hat with bills in the front and back) and cape. Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes TV series (1984-1994) Image via steampunk.wonderhowto.com More arrogant than the Rathbone portrayal, Jeremy Brettââ¬â¢s Sherlock Holmes is also more dramatic. This iteration of the famous detective emphasizes Holmesââ¬â¢ friendship with Watson. Nicholas Rowe Young Sherlock Holmesà movie (1985) Image via denofgeek.com Rowe is cast as the teenage Sherlock Holmes who gives us insight into his early years of solving mysteries. His teacher describes him as ââ¬Å"too precocious, too egotistical, for his own goodâ⬠, and the mature, intense portrayal may have you wondering if Holmes was always a grownup. Michael Caine Without a Clue movieà (1988) Image via top10films.co.uk Caines Holmes is a bit more, er, bumbling than classic. If youve always secretly rooted for Robin over Batman, à or Tonto over the Lone Ranger, then this flick is for you. Without a Clues Dr. Watson, portrayed by the great Ben Kingsley, is revealedà to be the real mystery-solving mastermind. Robert Downey, Jr. Sherlock Holmes (2009) à Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) movies Image via clothesonfilm.com Perhaps one of the flashiestà takes on Holmes is Downeysà big screen version. Purists to Conans original works might snub RDJ, but others might like the fast-talking, even faster-thinking sleuth. Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlockà TV series (2010- ) Image via BBC/Hartswood Cumberbatch is the Sherlock of the 2000s. He has the beloved characteristicsà of the 1880s Holmes, placed inà modern London with a few dramatic quirks (such as storing everything in his Mind Palace). A bit arrogant, a bit high-functioning sociopathic, and a whole lot of brilliant. Jonny Lee Miller Elementaryà TV series (2012-à ) Image via cbswatchmagazine.com Millers portrayal is another contemporary take on Holmes. Aà recovering drug addict, assisting the NYPD in solving crimes,à will all the Holmes-y eccentricities. Sir Ian McKellen Mr. Holmes movie (2015) Image via eonline.com Is it possible for McKellen to disappoint? Scientifically speakingno. As for his version of Holmes, well find out!

Memo - Case Study Example Airing of this content was done by only few people among the CBS employees however, they failed on their duties. In this case the entire CBS is held responsible of actions of the employees who aired the content in the course of undertaking their duties. FCC had earlier come up with three ethics, these are: explicit scenery of the portrayal of sexual organs or activities. The substance dwells on or repeats at extent portrayal of sexual organs or activities. The last one is whether the substance appears to tamper or is used to titillate, or whether it may intensify the probable indecency of broadcast. FCC has made all the principles and laws clear whereby any form of exposure is prohibited by the law. Pacifica challenge on FCCs fleeting expletives is a decent illustration of infringement of the set standards and principles by FCC. Amid a mid-afternoon radio show George Carlins monolog, was publicized by a radio station. The monologs had smudged words in it that shouldnt be said in an open wireless transmission. The audience members were cautioned prior of a probability of sensitive and offensive dialect. Later a protestation was sent to FCC by a man who claimed to have listened to the show while driving with his young child. As a result of the fact that monologue contained non-scripted spoken vulgarity obscene words during a live radio broadcast makes it an fleeting expletive The FCC and Fox can be used as a prime example in this case whereby the ABC claimed to having not received a fair advertisement preceding to the broadcasts in question from FCC. This is the fact that fleeting invectives and short-lived nudity could actionably be found indecent, , however the FCCââ¬â¢s over-all policy is clear and which requires it to have a context-specific inspection of each purportedly offensive program with an aim of determining whether it needs censuring or not. However, I concur that the centerori renunciation by the court is incorrect that the Super Bowl

Investing in Portfolios and CAPM Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Investing in Portfolios and CAPM - Essay Example If the investor chooses alternative 1 and invests all the money in Evergreen, then he can earn a return of 13.8%. Since Evergreen is a safe company, therefore the standard deviation of returns is quite low and risk coefficient is only 0.11. One must keep in mind that by investing in this company, the investor is foregoing chance of earning high returns. In other words, the investor is foregoing chance of earning high returns for increased safety by investing in this company. On the other hand, in the case of alternative 2, if the investor decides to invest in more dynamic of the two companies ACE limited, then the investor is foregoing safety of investment for high returns. This will enable the investor to earn a return which is as high as 25%. However, the risk coefficient and standard deviation for this investment is also higher at 0.31 and 7.6% respectively. A third option is to invest in the form of an equally weighted portfolio. In this case, the returns have increased from what the investor could earn by investing solely in Evergreen and at the same time the high risk of investing in Ace Ltd has also been reduced. The returns have increased from 13.8% to 19% and at the same time risk coefficient has decreased from 0.31 to 0.2. In the case of alternative 4, the investor will invest heavily in Evergreen and take very small exposure in ACE. This option is probably the worst alternative because the returns of this option are not very high, but the risk has greatly increased to 0.47. In the above scenario, we can see that the returns have increased when the investor has decided to invest in portfolios and at the same time risk coefficient has gone down. This tells us that diversification leads to lower risk and high return. However, one must keep in mind that diversification only minimizes one type of risk that an investor faces. There is another kind of risk which is known as systematic risk and it cannot be eliminated no matter how well diversified the portf olio is. Hence, there is always some chance of investors losing money even if the money is invested in the form of a portfolio. The correlation coefficient above shows that the investment in Evergreen and Ace is negatively correlated. A shrewd investor always try to invest in companies that are negatively correlate so that the downward trend in the returns of one business can be offset by the increased returns on the other investment in the same portfolio. However, since these two investments are not perfectly correlated, the portfolio is not well balance and some side will be higher than another and investor can face periods of high returns or loss depending on the market situation. It can be concluded from studying the above alternatives that it is wise for investors to not to take large exposures on one single stock. The investors should try to construct portfolios that should give equal or close weightage to all the companies in the portfolios in order to enjoy the benefits of r isk diversification. If there is one company in the portfolio which has higher weightage than the other companies ten the portfolioââ¬â¢s performance will be highly dependent on that one company and benefits of diversification will disappear. TASK 2: Capital Asset Pricing Model is a tool to

Airtel New Advertising Campaign A Critical Analysis Marketing Essay
Airtel New Advertising Campaign A Critical Analysis Marketing Essay The first question we encounter in the study of advertising and brand promotions as students is why advertising? Is it really important? After all, how much role does promotion play as part of the 4Ps in realizing the ultimate marketing objectives of the brand or the company? The new advertisement campaign of Airtel provides a fascinating case that helps us in studying these questions with all their criticalities. Background Airtel is an Indian multinational telecom service provider with presence across 19 countries. In India it is one of the most reputed brands. Outside India, it is known as Zain in Africa and Warid in Bangladesh. Having revolutionized the telecom industry in the fifteen years since its inception, Airtel decided to reposition the brand with a new logo, jingle and advertisements so as to have a uniform presence world-wide. The idea behind the new positioning was to signify Airtels journey towards the new world of digitization. It wanted to make its presence felt in the 3 G, social media and mobile based e-commerce space and connect with the new age customers. Hence a London based ad agency came up with the new logo with letter a in lowercase, with Airtel written beneath it in lowercase. In the words of Sanjay Kapoor, the CEO of Bharti Airtel, The new logo is modern ,vibrant , friendly and signifies Airtels commitment to reach out to its shareholders and consumers , the letters in the low ercase is a symbol of its humility . New logo Old Logo http://www.afaqs.com/all/news/images/news_story_grfx/2010/28828_2.jpg http://www.afaqs.com/all/news/images/news_story_grfx/2010/28828_1.jpg The Launch The new logo is paired with the tagline Dil jo chahe pass laye again reinforcing Airtels commitment to the users. The new look was promoted through all the advertising channels such as TV, print, outdoor and digital campaigns. In an attempt to make the customers identify with the new look, Airtel even launched a campaign where the customers had to name the new logo of Airtel .To reemphasize the new look of the Airtel ,A.R Rehman was roped in to compose a fresh jingle for Airtel . The story so far looked good .With the big names such as JWT, Madison Media Plus, Digitas and Web chutneyà working behind the campaign, one could have been assured of the success of the campaign. The Backlash What happened next took everyone by surprise. Social media space and newspapers alike were abuzz with the negative criticism of the new look and campaign. Social media conversations about the rebranding exercise In a survey conducted by brand monitor analysis the sentiment of tweets, the results showed that Almostà 62%à of the conversations about the new Airtel logo were negative à Facebook discussions and LinkedIn discussions the Position team analyzed, 3 distinct themes around the reactions emerged: Approximatelyà 15% of the conversations were direct comparisonsà of the new Airtel logo to the Videocon and Vodafone logos Approximatelyà 10%à of the conversations suggested that Airtel should have invested money in improving their customer service and network availability instead A very small minorityà (1%) called for a reinstatement of the old logoà or a fresh redesign exercise (Source: http://blogs.position2.com/airtel-brand-revamp-social-media-response) Fans even went to the extent of comparing the logo with Videocon Vodafone logo Click to enlarge: Logo Comparisons Created by a fan Primary Research In order to get a first-hand account of the user reaction the Airtels new advertising campaign I interviewed some fellow B school students who have done their specialization in marketing. Given below are excerpts of some of the interviews Sayan Majumder: I dont connect with new brand identity of Airtel .I had more emotional attachment with the previous one. It is true that a company needs to know to evolve but there was no need for Airtel to rebrand itself. It could have focused on providing more on customer satisfaction Sakyabrata Dutta: Airtel visual appeal has gone for a toss .In an attempt to appeal to a global audience the advertisement has lost its local flavor Sandeep Somisetty: The new promotion strategies of Airtel are definitely a deliberate attempt to connect with the young 3G audience. The focus on technology as the underlying theme of its advertisements definitely reinforces the brand as a technology savvy one. However, I am not sure how much this drastic brand repositioning will translate into enhanced top-line growth for the company. From my little knowledge of the telecom sector, most of the sources of revenue lie in the untapped rural market. It is hard to find them connect with this new urban, cosmopolitan avatar of the brand. The Learning In spite of the initial negative sentiments ,consumers have now started to connect with new brand identity and may eventually come to like it .But whatever may be the final results for Airtel ,this campaign will always be remembered for the fuss it created and a few lessons an advertising professional can learn. Customers own the brand for them its a way of life and any change in the brand proposition should be done taking customer into consideration; otherwise the millions spend on advertising just go down the drain. Such a fiasco can even affect the sales of the company. In one instance a salesman was dejected that the shopkeepers were making fun of the new merchandise of the Airtel. Advertisement forms an integral part of the marketing of a brand. It is a means to reach the consumers and should be designed keeping in mind the final marketing objective to be achieved. Finally, advertisers should learn that If it aint broke, dont fix it. The Airtel brand itself was build through years of tremendous hard work exemplary performance. It is not clear what prompted this change of positioning, may be the recent telecom troubles acted as catalysts. However, evidences suggest that whatever be the motive, it was not successful. The brand managers of Airtel may be forced to take a lesson like those at Coca-Cola who famously introduced the New Coke in 1985 in response to Pepsi had to take it back after huge consumer backlash.

World Religions and the North Africa/Southwest Asia Realm
WORLD RELIGIONS AND THE NORTH AFRICA/SOUTHWEST ASIA REALM Nancy Brown Walden University The realm of North Africa/Southwest Asia is a site of rich oil and natural gas deposits, economic growth and international relationships. The realm is also the birthplace of the three major world religions; Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Centuries of conflict lie at the heart of this realm due to differences in religious beliefs. In reviewing the scripture readings presented for this lesson, each religion has one intrinsic similarity; that is the belief in God. Where both Islam and Judaism view God as one entity, Christians believe in the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), (Islam, Judaism and, 2004-2013). Review of the scriptureâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Another field lies on the Gaza Strip which has created contention. Palastines are ready to begin taking advantage of opportunity for economic relief; however Israel has not given permission. The scriptures have shown that there are similarities of Christianity, Judaism and Islamic beliefs. The major difference in the writings is the treatment of strangers. In examining the contentious behaviors of the people in the Middle East, both past and present, religious beliefs have played a part in the development of the realmââ¬â¢s history.
